Discount Calculator

Find the discount amount, final price, and savings from an original price and discount rate.

Enter values to begin.

Formula

discount = original price × discount rate ÷ 100
final price = original price − discount

Example

A 20% discount on $80 saves $16, giving a final price of $64.

How discount calculations work

A discount reduces an original price by a stated percentage. First convert the discount rate to a decimal, multiply it by the original price, and subtract the discount amount from the original price.

Practical example

For an item priced at 80 with a 25% discount, the discount amount is 20 and the sale price is 60. If a store also applies tax after the discount, calculate the discounted price first and then apply the applicable tax rate.

Common mistakes

Do not enter 125 when you mean a 12.5% discount. The rate should normally be between 0 and 100. Also distinguish a discount from a markup: a markup increases a cost or price, while a discount reduces the original price.

Before relying on the result

Store promotions can include minimum purchases, coupons, exclusions, or taxes calculated at a different stage. The calculator shows the mathematical discount only; check the seller’s terms for the final amount charged.

Frequently asked questions

How is a discount amount calculated?

Multiply the original price by the discount rate divided by 100. Subtract that discount amount from the original price to get the discounted price.

Can a discount be applied before tax?

Often a listed sale price is calculated before tax, but the order depends on the seller and local rules. Use the calculator for the mathematical discount and verify the final charge with the seller.

What is the difference between a discount and a markup?

A discount reduces a reference price, while a markup increases a cost or reference price. The same percentage does not reverse the calculation because the reference amounts differ.
